Comprehensive Risk Reduction & Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular disease which includes heart attacks, strokes, and other illnesses related to the heart and blood vessels, is THE NUMBER ONE cause of illness and death accounting for 50% in men and over 40% in women. That percentage is expected to increase as treatments for other diseases improve and obesity and sedentary lifestyle becomes more widespread. For this and other reasons, The Womans Clinic has made a commitment to helping our patients reduce this risk through our comprehensive Lipid Clinic Program.

Dr. D. H. Clark is Board Certified by the American Board of Clinical Lipidology and oversees the clinic along with our other physicians who carefully screen and evaluate what our patients are at risk for, and then treat and counsel to achieve maximum risk reduction.

The process usually begins with a lipid panel, which is a simple blood test that screens for potential problems. When the screen indicates a possible risk, the patient is evaluated with a thorough history and physical exam along with other indicated tests to accurately assess the risk status. Screening is done for related problems such as diabetes, pre-diabetes, and thyroid problems. When necessary, appropriate referrals to other physicians may be made.  In all cases, lifestyle management is outlined and stressed. Medications are indicated in some cases but not all.

Ongoing management includes regular reassessment for effectiveness of therapies and monitoring for side effects of any prescribed medications.
